Year 4
Welcome to Year 4
Welcome to Year 4
The Teacher in Year 4 is Miss Magda and the Teaching Assistant is Mr Coop.
Year 4 children will take part in Mastering Number KS2 programme in partnership with NCETM and our Local Maths Hub. Children will receive daily sessions on fluency and multiplicative reasoning.
Throughout the year, we read a huge number of texts and this helps us to enjoy our reading as well as develop our writing.
We study many exciting topics and go on a number of school trips.
Autumn Term
In the Autumn, the children learn about the eight points of the compass and develop their map skills. They learn about the UK focusing on its sustainable future. During the second half of the Autumn term, we look back in time and explore the Roman Empire. The children’s art skills are developed during the term when they are encouraged to make careful observations and investigate different media in order to present their work. They will focus on work by Hector Gonzales and on Roman art.
In Science, we learn about how humans digest food and keep healthy as well as how to read and record food chains. We then take a look at electricity and learn to gather and record data in different ways. In DT lessons, we use our knowledge and skills learnt in science to create torches. In music, we will listen to songs from the shows (Joseph and the Technicoloured Dream coat) and begin to learn how to read rhythms using standard notation. In Computing, we focus on staying safe and computer coding.
Spring Term
During the Spring, we learn about states of matter: making predictions, asking questions and performing our own tests. We then investigate how we hear things in our science lessons. In Topic and RE, local parish links are strengthened as we learn about the history of the Sacred Heart Parish in Rochdale using a wide rand of resources as evidence. E-safety will remain a focus as we celebrate E-safety day. In addition, we continue to develop our computing skills in making music online. In DT lessons the children will have the opportunity to adapt a recipe and, in art, they will look at portraits by local artist L. S. Lowry as well as examples of Egyptian art.
Later in the spring term, we will be learning about the fascinating (and gruesome) Ancient Egyptians; including looking at their artwork and learning about Egyptian mummification. In music we will learn about the work of the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky focusing on his first ever composition ‘The Firebird’. We will also study the work of Johann Sebastian Bach and begin to learn to read musical notation using hand bells as our class instrument.
Summer Term
The final term is packed with exciting topics that centre around the rainforest. The children will learn about the layers of the rainforest and the animal life that lives there. They will compose rainforest soundscapes. The children will create art work that is inspired by the Rainforest (and also by the work of Henry Rousseau and Daniel Mackie). They will consider the future of the rainforest in light of Global Warming and deforestation. The children will study the Amazon Rainforest as a case study.
In RE, the children will study the major world religion: Islam. They will build tolerance and respect for others. In computing, the children will learn how to animate and use spreadsheets. In music, the children will continue to build confidence and skill when performing on the hand bells. In addition, they will listen to a range of music from different world traditions and cultures. They will enjoy listening to a range of popular songs on World Music Day.
