MATHS
The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) supports schools in England to develop their maths teaching through local Maths Hubs (MHNW1). Our school works with North West One Maths Hub to provide our staff (and staff from other schools) regular professional development in teaching maths. Evidence shows that improving the quality of teaching is the best way to improve children’s success and enjoyment of maths as Maths is a fascinating and creative subject. It is essential for everyday life, a useful tool in other subjects and a rewarding subject to study in its own right.
We take part in NCETM and Maths Hub projects. Our most recent involvement with NCETM and MHNW1 includes Mastering Number KS1 and KS2, Teaching for Mastery and Year 5 -8 Continuity Teacher Work Group.
At Sacred Heart we believe that all children are capable of being successful in Maths with hard work and the right teaching.
We use Power Maths scheme (White Rose New Edition) and NCETM materials to plan our lessons to help our pupils to acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. The phrase ‘Teaching for Mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give children the best chances of mastering maths.
